Retail counters are useful when you need nearby pickup or in-person help. Online specialists deserve a place on the shortlist for planned runs, particularly at quantities where their bulk tiers apply. Office Depot’s advertised 18¢ rate is for black-and-white, not color. Its document-printing page lists color from 70¢. That distinction corrects the older comparison on this page. Likewise, a provider’s lowest bulk headline does not mean a small order receives that rate.
For a local library, school or independent shop, ask about color availability, eligibility, quantity limits and the complete price. Do not assume a subsidized campus rate is available to the public or that every branch has the same equipment.
What does the cheap per-page price become after shipping?
We tested the 55printing color form with letter size, 24 lb bond, one printed side, white borders and Standard production. The examples use one set and Ground shipping to ZIP 33140, with no coupon. All totals are USD before tax, checked October 30, 2026.

The printing-only rate changes from about 14.9¢ at 100 pages to 13.5¢ at 500. Shipping is not a flat per-page charge either. This is why neither “online always wins above 50 pages” nor one universal crossover quantity is reliable. Requote the quantities you would actually use; do not order unwanted pages solely to reach a lower unit rate.
Use this calculation for each provider: (printing + finishing + shipping + applicable tax − eligible discount) ÷ usable printed pages. For a booklet or packet, also compare the price per complete set. Count a discount only after confirming its product, quantity, expiry and other conditions in the current quote.
Send every provider one clear job specification
Record the PDF page size, number of document pages, complete sets, color choice, printed sides, paper and finishing. Fifty sets of a ten-page PDF contain 500 printed sides. Printed double-sided, that even-page file uses 250 physical sheets. A quote for 500 one-page handouts is not a quote for 500 ten-page packets.
The current 55printing copy form displays a 50-sheet minimum. At the usual one-page-per-side layout, one set needs 50 single-sided pages or 100 double-sided pages. Other layouts change that calculation. Use the live sheet counter, current limits and available selections.
Match white borders versus full bleed, collation, stapling and binding as well. If one quote includes cover stock, trimming or faster production, identify that difference before comparing the bottom number. Ask how mixed color and black-and-white documents are priced rather than assuming only the colored pages attract the color rate.
How can you save without buying the wrong result?
Choose paper for how the piece will be used. Bond is a practical option for forms, training notes and handouts people write on. Heavier cover stock gives a counter display or leave-behind more stiffness. A coated surface changes reflections and the appearance of photographs. The cheapest stock is poor value if it cannot do the job.
Keep useful color and remove color that adds nothing. A color-coded chart or menu photograph may need it; plain instructions may work in black and white. Avoid paying for unnecessary finishing, but keep binding or collation when it makes a multi-page packet usable. The comparison is about an appropriate finished document, not simply the lowest paper weight.
Prepare one final PDF before requesting quotes. Check the trim size, margins, page order, small text and image sharpness at the intended print size. Follow the selected provider’s actual bleed guideline. A generic instruction to add the same bleed or crop marks everywhere can produce a different result from the one you intended.
Which service and deadline checks matter most?
For a job needed today, confirm a nearby store’s actual pickup slot. For delivery, work backwards from the in-hand date: file review and approval, production, then transit. A one-day shipping service does not mean a one-day finished order. Ask what happens if the file needs a correction before approval.

Are online copies always cheaper after 100 pages?

What is the fairest way to compare prices?

Compare the total per usable page or complete packet. For packets, divide the complete order total by usable finished sets; this keeps a twelve-page packet distinct from one printed page.
Does a cheap copy order include a proof?
Check the provider and selected option. At 55printing, Print as is is the default; the free human review and PDF approval proof must be selected. Allow the stated 4–8 business hours for review plus your approval time. Confirm whether you need layout review or a physical sample: a screen PDF cannot establish the final stock feel or printed color.
Should I print a small urgent job locally?

Can a double-sided quote be compared with a single-sided price?
First normalize the document pages and complete sets. A twelve-page packet has twelve printed sides whether it uses twelve single-sided sheets or six duplex sheets. Ask each provider to quote that same finished packet, including its paper and finishing. Do not halve a single-sided price without checking the actual duplex total.
