Why scan a QR before you print

A QR code that looks sharp on a laptop can still fail on a 3.5 by 2 card, a gloss flyer, or a yard sign viewed from the curb. 55printing prints these marks every week. We built this scanner so you can drop the same file we would send to press and get a readable or not-readable answer, plus the purpose encoded in the payload. That stops a reprint when the code points at a dead page, a Wi-Fi string, or nothing at all.

How the scanner studies your file

Images and PDFs stay in your browser. We rasterize each PDF page, then try several reads: normal, inverted (light-on-dark), contrast boost, and a closer crop if the mark is small on a large sheet. Word and PowerPoint files are opened as ZIP packages so we can scan the pictures stored inside. If the QR was drawn as lines instead of a picture, export that page to PDF or photograph the printed piece and scan that instead.

Instant scan does not send the file to 55printing. Use the File Uploader path if you want a person to test the same code under coating, UV, or outdoor light.

What "readable" means here

Readable means a current phone camera can decode the payload from the pixels in your file. That is the same first check we run in prepress. It is not a promise that a 0.4 inch mark will scan from a moving car. After a readable result, still judge size against the product: business cards usually need about 0.7 inch plus quiet space; yard signs need a much larger mark.

Not readable means we found no decodable QR, or we saw a QR-like square that would not unlock. Common causes are blur, low contrast on a colored background, a logo that ate the center, a crop that cut a finder square, or a screenshot saved too small. Fix the file, then scan again before you approve the proof.

  • Payment URIs and plain text when nothing else matches

We show the raw payload so you can copy it. We do not open the link for you. Confirm the address yourself. A pretty code that hides a wrong domain wastes the print run.

After the scan

Does my artwork leave this computer?

Not on Instant scan. Images and PDFs are read in your browser. Word and PowerPoint are opened locally so we can look at the pictures packed inside. If you choose We will do it for you, the File Uploader sends the file to our prepress team the same way a regular artwork review works. Do not put passwords or card numbers into a QR you then upload for a human check.

What files can I upload?

Photos (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG), PDFs, Word DOC/DOCX, and PowerPoint PPT/PPTX. A camera photo of a printed card works when you do not have the design file. Old binary Word files that hold no embedded picture may need a PDF export. If we cannot turn a format into pixels, we say so instead of inventing a scan.

The code looks fine. Why did you say not readable?

Phones need contrast, quiet space, and enough pixels. A logo in the center, a navy mark on a black flyer, a 0.3 inch code on a card, or a JPEG saved from a chat app can all fail. Try a higher-resolution export, more white space, or a fresh PNG from the QR Code Generator, then scan again. If Instant still fails, upload the file and ask us to test a printed proof.

Can this replace a printed proof scan?

It replaces the first digital check, not the last physical one. Coating, UV, sunlight, and viewing distance still matter. We use this tool on incoming files, then we still scan a printed card or flyer when the job is on press. Use both: digital here, then a phone on the real piece.

Does 55printing scan QR codes with this tool before printing?

Yes. We use this scanner on incoming card, flyer, and sign files to learn if a phone can decode the mark and what purpose it holds. It does not replace a printed-piece test under coating or sunlight. We keep improving the reads from codes that failed in real light, and we are not treating the scanner as finished.
