PDF BOXES · EDGE INK · NO FALSE PASS

Check if a PDF has bleed

Read the page boxes and render the artwork edge. A BleedBox is reported separately from visible ink, because an empty box does not create printable bleed.

A PDF can contain a BleedBox while the artwork stops at the trim edge. This checker reports MediaBox, TrimBox and BleedBox geometry, then measures rendered nonwhite pixels near all four edges. You need both structural room and actual artwork beyond trim. The report is evidence for review, not automatic print approval.

Coordinates create room; only the artwork can fill that room with printable bleed.
White border print compared with a full bleed print edge
Both finishes can be correct. The order choice decides which evidence the PDF needs.

Bleed is artwork, not only a named PDF box

TrimBox describes the intended finished boundary. BleedBox describes an allowed outer area. Neither guarantees that a photo, background or color actually continues beyond trim. That is why the report shows geometry and rendered edge ink separately.

A white-border job is not defective merely because ink stops before the paper edge. Choose white-border contain when the design should remain untouched. Choose full bleed only when real background artwork safely extends past trim.

How to check bleed in a PDF

  1. Open the production PDF. Use the exported file, not a screenshot of one page.
  2. Compare boxes with ink. A larger BleedBox and edge ink support different parts of the decision.
  3. Inspect the proof. Confirm every intended full-bleed edge and keep critical content inside the safe zone.

PDF bleed questions

How do I check if a PDF has bleed?

Check two things: whether the PDF defines trim and bleed boundaries, and whether the artwork visibly continues through the area that will be cut. This tool reports page boxes and rendered edge ink separately so one empty metadata box cannot create a false pass.

What is the difference between TrimBox and BleedBox?

TrimBox represents the intended finished boundary. BleedBox represents an outer region that may contain artwork for trimming tolerance. A larger BleedBox provides room, but the background still has to extend into that room on every edge intended to bleed. Measure that extension on the proof, not only in the box numbers.

Why does the report show low edge ink?

The rendered outer band is mostly white or very light. That can be correct for a white-border design, but it is a warning for an intended full-bleed background. Review each edge because one side may bleed while another intentionally remains white.

Can this tool add missing bleed?

No. It diagnoses evidence. Adding bleed requires original artwork, deliberate background extension or a customer-approved rebuild. Automatically stretching border pixels can damage type, logos and photos, so this checker does not pretend that operation is safe. Use the File Uploader when the background has to be rebuilt on purpose.

Does a BleedBox guarantee the printer can trim the job?

No. It only records coordinates. The artwork, safe-zone placement, product template, imposition and production tolerance still need review. A human proof should confirm that backgrounds extend and critical content stays away from the cut. The official product template remains the trim reference.

Is a white border always a problem?

No. Regular white borders are a valid production choice and often preserve the full customer image without crop. The problem occurs only when the order promises full bleed but the file contains white paper or stopped artwork where trimming needs extension.

We separate an empty BleedBox from ink that actually reaches the trim

A 4 by 6 postcard was exported with a BleedBox and a white photo that stopped at the trim. The box looked generous. The edges were paper. This bench reported the boxes and the missing edge ink, so we did not call it full bleed. A second file had no BleedBox name and still ran color off every side. We kept that one and rebuilt the boxes to match the ink.

55printing uses this evidence before offset postcards and flyers are plated. We keep teaching the difference between a named box and visible ink. Daily. No ceiling.

Does 55printing use this bleed check before plating?

Yes. We read TrimBox, BleedBox, and the rendered ink at each edge before an offset postcard or flyer is treated as full bleed. An empty BleedBox is not a pass. The public tool does not add bleed by stretching pixels. A rebuild goes through prepress when the customer approves it.

Bleed evidence still sits next to color, preflight, and the uploader

After the edges are honest, an offset file may still need the color-profile check, and a rebuild belongs in the File Uploader. Those benches stay beside this one.
