A booklet printing project is managed in different methods. There are various ways to arrange the pages in a catalog. It all depends on how the final product will look like. When you are getting in the area, you will come across two-page arranging procedures. One is the “Readers spreads” and the others is “Printer Spreads”. Not always will you get individual page numbers to arrange pages in proper order? Moreover, the chances of improper arrangement remain. Keep reading to know how you can arrange a catalog design easily and systematically.

Readers Spreads

The printers order is different from the reader’s order. This means the common order in which a reader is reading a book is page 1, page 2, page 3 and so on. But this is not necessarily the same order in which the book was originally printed. Precisely, the pages in a catalog are printed without following a particular order.

Printers Spreads (During the Catalog Design)

The same catalog when it comes to the printing process changes its order of printing. It is printed completely in a different order than which the readers read. For example, when readers are reading it in the order Page 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on, the printing format can be different. The printing order is likely to be Page 8, page 1, page 2, page 7, page 6, page 3 and so on. This format of printing the pages of the booklet is known as printers spread.

Difference Between Readers Spread and Printers Spread

The readers spread is not the format in which the booklet is printed. However, it is still important to maintain the order. Once the catalog is printed this order will be taken to reference. You may think that the pages are not printed in particular order. They are arranged later in a separate process. But when you look carefully, you will see that the pages are in order, only if you consider the page as a whole. We will discuss this with an example in the next subhead.

A reader’s spread is created for the convenience of the readers. It is also the format that most people commonly believe it to be printed. But the booklet is printed in the printer spread format. It is very different from the readers spread. You will not find the pages organized in the correct numerical order. However, they are organized in a way that will just fall in the correct order when the catalog design goes through the binding process.

Printer Spread with Example

If you are unable to understand the page arrangement in a printer spread, this example below will help you understand the process easily. Take a sheet of paper and place it on a table. Now take another sheet and place it on top of the first sheet.

The next step is to fold both the sheets from the middle and. Right now you can see that you have a total eight sides. Starting from the cover page, mark each side form 1 to 8. When you are done with this, you will notice that Page 1 is linked directly to page 8 on the reverse side. Similarly, page 2 is together with page 7, page 6 is with page 3 and page 4 is with page 5.

The only pages that you may notice to be printed in the correct order are page 4 and 5. The entire process happens because each page is divided into two parts. So when one particular page is getting printed, it is printing two separate pages.

Do all printers print this way?

Now the common question that will come in everyone’s mind is whether this is the only available printing way. To answer that, there are other ways too. But this is the most commonly used format and most printers are okay with the format too. However, some printers work with a completely different format and compatibility.

Linear Page Organization

Apart from the printer spread, most printers use another method known as linear page organization. Most printers use this method to save time and speed up the process. Although this is not the actual process they still use it. In this process, the pages are arranged in an organized numerical format. It helps the printers to keep a clear idea of identifying the pages as per the needs. Once the printing is done, the pages are organized in the original format. When there are huge orders for catalog design separately, the process is often put into use.

This process is often followed when booklets are being printed in the off-set printers instead of the copier machines. The printing concept of off-set printers is completely different. But in general, organizing the paper in the linear format is easy for the printer. When you provide a printer with a 2-page design catalog they can find it difficult to comprehend it at first.

This method, however, has a disadvantage. It is good to use it with a catalog that does not have a lot of pages. You can take each page individually and then manage it later. But when you are working with a booklet with too many pages, it gets difficult to manage each page in separate files. Hence to avoid this inconvenience, most printers use PDF format. Using PDF gives the printer flexibility to handle too many pages in a single file. Moreover, the option will allow them to customize the document. They can arrange the margins and borders to meet the printing scales accurately.

Page Arrangement with Imposition Method

Booklet paper arrangement with the Imposition method is the least popular of all methods. Most printers will avoid this method. It is because the process can make the paper arrangement more confusing and complicated. This method is not appropriate or convenient for beginners. Expert printers can use this method to accomplish a good catalog design. The imposition process involves printing arrangement before its printing. When the printing is done and the pages are folded, bound and trimmed, they automatically fall in the correct page order.

How to distinguish Front and Rear cover pages to the Printer?

To help printers understand better, many clients choose to send the form cover page and rear cover page in separate files. Sometimes this is unnecessary. The most saddle-stitched catalog design comes with the front and rear covers in separate bounds. They are thicker than the normal pages within the booklet. This gives the catalogs a better presentation and steadiness to handle. It also makes the booklet more durable.

But when you are submitting a file to the printer, you should follow certain instructions to make it clear for the printer to understand your needs. So if you want to opt for a self-cover book you do not need to provide the printer with separate files. It’s because the cover page and inner pages are to remain the same. This can also confuse printers. But if you want to get thick outer covers, it is a good idea to provide the printer with separate files for the cover and rear pages.

Arranging catalogs design with the printer spread format is the most commonly used method. It is easy, fast and convenient. So next time you want to get a booklet printed, arrange the papers in the printer spread unless the printer asks you for some other method.
